1. Context

    Taiwan relies heavily on oil and coal imports to meet its energy needs, with renewable energy sources making up only a minuscule portion of the nation's total energy consumption. This is despite the fact that the island of Taiwan is ideally located to take advantage of powerful winds for offshore and onshore applications. With its tropical climate and abundant suitable sites for wind power plants, Taiwan has tremendous potential to develop into one of the world's foremost renewable energy producers.

    Project

    This large-scale project harnesses the powerful winds blowing along Taiwan’s West coast to construct two sustainable onshore wind farms: one with 103.5 MW and another with 46 MW capacities. The facilities consist of 62 turbines, which collectively generate renewable energy fed directly into the national grid, leading to an annual reduction of approximately 300,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from fossil fuels.

    Not only does this help accelerate the country’s transition towards renewable energy sources, but it also reduces the reliance on imported fossil fuels—this has economic and national security benefits. To further preserve the environment around these wind farms, multiple activities have been established for environmental protection, such as regular beach clean-ups and educational tours about climate change, pollution, and other related topics to raise public awareness. Additionally, areas of local land have been reforested to promote local biodiversity.

    Onshore wind turbines

    Onshore wind turbines generate electricity at a utility-scale, comparable to power plants. They replace fossil fuels with emissions-free electricity.

    Today, 314,000 wind turbines supply nearly 4 percent of global electricity, which will soon be much more. In 2015, a record 63 gigawatts of wind power were installed worldwide.

    Onshore wind farms have small footprints, typically using no more than 1 percent of the land they sit on, so grazing, farming, recreation, or conservation can happen simultaneously with power generation. What’s more, it takes one year or less to build a wind farm—quickly producing energy and a return on investment.
